Williams Lake Classic Mountain Bike Race -2015
It was a sunny Sunday morning in Rosendale for the William’s Lake Classic. The 238 riders saw temps in the mid 60 for the start of the Cat 2 and 3 races.
Williams Lake, in its eighth year, is the kick-off event for the NYSMTB series. The unique course of roughly, and rough, 5 miles is a combination of single track, double tack and a cave.
“The last two years have been a big jump from in riders over previous years,” Christian Favata, Race Promoter, said.
This year’s course was different from the past years.
“Every year we change it up a little bit. Last year we had a figure 8 this year we did a counter clockwise loop. It kinds keeps it fresh,” Favata said.
It certainly is challenging
“It was brutal. Oh my God that was great,” Shane Whittaker, Cat 3 rider, exclaimed as he dismounted after his race.
“That’s the essence of mountain biking right there,” Whittaker said. “I don’t know how I did it”.
The atmosphere at the finish was a bit like a picnic families waiting for their riders to finish hung out on blanket and had pizza.
The kid’s race had two heats 3-6 and 7-12. It’s always a good time watching the parents push the younger kids around the course.
Things were a bit warmer for the Cat 1 and Pros who started off at about 1:00.
“The Pro race came down to a sprint finish,” Favata said. “People had a good time. The racing seem to be fun”.
Next race in the series will be the Round Top Enduro & Mountain Bike Festival on June 13, 2015 in Round Top, NY.
