​Triathlon and Duathlon Events Up and Down the Hudson Valley, 2018​​

Whether the weather is cold or whether the weather is hot, it's triathlon and duathlon season. We've compiled a list of triathlons and dualthons up and down the Hudson Valley. 

April 
The first weekend in April starts off the 2018 triathlon-duathlon season with the West Point Duathlon.
At Camp Buckner, Saturday, April 7, 9:00 am the season-opening event follows duathlon format of run, bike, run with a 2 km run, 22 km bike, and 5 km run. Run courses will be restricted to the inside of Camp Buckner and Camp Natural Bridge.

A new series by coach Mark Wilson, the New York Duathlon Series - Hudson Valley, starts Saturday, April 21, 9:00 am, at Kenneth Wilson State Park with a run 2-miles, bike 12-miles, run 2-miles course. 

Hard on the heels is the Delmar Duathlon Sunday, April 29,  at 9:00 am with another chance to run
2 miles, bike 10, and then run another 2 miles.

Here's an early season triathlon in Saratoga Springs, while this event is hosted by the YMCA the swim is in a pond not the Y pool. The 24th Annual Anyone Can Tri on Sunday, May 6,  has kids' and adults' events. Kids 8 and under swim 25-yards, bike 0.5-mile and run 0.25-mile. Kids 9-13 swim 50 yards,bike 1-mile, then run 0.5 mile. The adult race is a 350-yard swim, an 11-mile bike, finishing up with a 5k run.

The Spring Dual Against CF in New Paltz is on Saturday, May 12. Run 2 miles on a rail trail, bike down Springtown Road for 6 miles out and 6 miles back, and then run 2 miles on the rail trial, 10:00 am start. The Kid’s Dual starts at approx 10:30 am .5 mile run, 1.75-mile bike, .35 mile run. Photos fro 2017 HERE. 

New York Duathlon Series - Hudson Valley - Race #2 is on Saturday, May 5.

The Catskill Spring Rush is a 2.25-mile run, 10-mile bike, and a 1.25-mile kayak/canoe. Kayaks or canoes will be available on site with life jackets, first come first serve basis. Saturday, May 19,  at 8:30 try your skills at Catskill High School Address: 341 West Main St Catskill, New York 12414. 

In Harriman State Park the HarryMan Triathlon will take place on Saturday, May 19, 10:00 am,
There are Half Iron Distance Triathlon distance events swim 1.2-miles, bike 56.1 -miles, run 13.1-miles and 
Olympic Distance Triathlon distance of swim .6-miles, bike-28.3 miles, and run 6.2-miles, to choose from. Photos from 2017 HERE.

Back after a hiatus in 2017 the American Zofingen Duathlon-sufferfest. The Short course is a 5-mile run, 29-mile bike, 5-mile run. The middle distance is arguably the most difficult because of the extra transitions 5-mile run, 29-mile bike, 5-mile run, 29-mile bike, 5-mile run. It’s named after local triathlete The G. Chris Gleason. Finally, the long course is 5-mile run, 84-mile bike, and 15-mile run. The event launches out of the Spring Farm Trailhead on the Mohonk Preserve Upper 27 Knolls Road Stone Ridge, Sunday, May 20, start time 8:00 am. Stories and photos from 2016 HERE, 2015 HERE.  2014 HERE.

Also on May 20 is the  Lake Welch Triathlon & Duathlon in Harriman State Park. The Tri offers a .25- mile swim, 11.5-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run. The duathlon varies a bit from standard duathlon distances at run 2-miles, bike 11.5-miles, run 3.1-miles.

June 
The Pawling Triathlon, on Saturday, June 2, 9:00 am, is a short .3 mile swim in a lake, bike 12-miles, run 3-miles in Lakeside Park, Pawling in Dutchess County. 

The Hudson Valley Triathlon Club Summer Tri Series, also hosted by Coach Mark Wilson, meets one Wednesday a month June through September at Kenneth Wilson State Park at 859 Wittenberg Road in Mount Tremper. The event is in the evening at 5:45 pm, first one- Wednesday, June 13. It’s a smallish lake, but the water is cold this early in the season. Distances are 400-yard swim, 12-mile bike, 2-mile run. The Stissing Sprint Triathlon is a beautiful race course that encompasses a small town, rolling hills and Stissing Lake in Dutchess County. It's a family-friendly, welcoming event, which works for both beginners and competitive triathletes on Saturday, June 30, 8:00 am. Distances are swim .5-mile, bike 16.5 -miles, run 3.3 -miles. The kids’ distances are determined by age.

July

Right down the road from PEAK headquarters the HITS Triathlon - Hudson Valley Triathlon offers full, half, Olympic, and aquabike events at Williams Lake Resorts. The swim in Williams Lake is scenic, the bike out around the Rondout Reservoir hilly, and the run is a mild out and back on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. This year’s event is on Saturday, July 7. Full Iron distance starts at 7:00 am at 424 Williams Lake Rd, Kingston, New York . Photos and story here and HERE.

Yes, there are two kayak-triathlon events in the Hudson Valley. The Triyakathon is a 2-mile run/walk along the Yonkers waterfront and the Saw Mill River, followed by a 10-mile ride up Warburton Ave to Hastings and back to the JFK Marina. To finish up a 1-mile long paddle on the Hudson. Then back on the bikes for the return to CURB. Saturday, July 14 start time 9:00.

 HVTC Summer Tri Series #2 Wednesday, July 11. 

Pine Bush Triathlon is a 325-yard lake swim, 11.5-mile bike ride, and 3.25-mile run in Guilderland, NY on Saturday, July 21,  at 8:00 am.

August 

 HVTC Summer Tri Series #3 Wednesday, August 15.

The West Point Triathlons are two days of back to back events. On Saturday, August 18,  at 
9:00 am are the Youth Tris with Distance determined by age. This is a USTA sanctioned event. 
4-6-year-old division: Swim – 10 yards, Bike – 0.25 mile (training wheels okay), Run – 50 yards. One parent allowed to be a helper during all events. 7-14-year-old division: Swim – 100 yards, Bike – 1 mile, Run – 0.75 mile. 

Following on Sunday, August 19, 8:30  the adult version consisting of a 750 meter Swim at scenic Lake Popolopen, a rolling 22km Bike along route 293, and challenging 5k Run through Camp Buckner and Camp Natural Bridge. Both days’ events will be held at Camp Buckner, West Point Triathlon 29th.

The Survival of the Shawangunks 4 Kids in held in New Paltz, NY. Home of the SOS Triathlon, this kids’ event starts with a pool swim, followed by a run on the rail trail, bike, and quarter-mile run to the finish.   This year Sat, August 25 younger kids start at 8:00am.Kids ages 7-10: 100-meter swim (4 lengths)1/2 mile run, 1-mile bike, .25- mile run to finish. Kids ages 11-15: 200-meter swim (8 lengths), 1-mile run, 4-mile bike, .25 mile run to Finish. Website- SOS 4 Kids. Story of past events 2017 HERE, 2016 HERE, 2015 HERE.

September 

Just a few weeks later on Sunday, September 9, is the progenitor, the Survival of the Shawangunks (SOS) Triathlon. The SOS is challenging in its seven transitions and distracting in its beauty. Bike 30 Miles, Run 4.5 Miles, Swim 1.1 Miles, Run 5.5 Miles, swim.5 Miles, Run 8.0 Miles, Swim 0.5 Miles, Run 0.7 Miles. Sri Chinmoy Swim/ Run, famous for the self-transcendence runs, this event in Harriman State Park offers a choice of three races: Swim/ Run, 10K Run, or 1K Swim on Sunday, September 9.

 HVTC Summer Tri Series #4 Wednesday, September 12.

The Toughman Triathlon is three events- Toughkids and Toughteens on Saturday, September 15. Toughkids distances  4 - 6 years old: swim 20-yards, bike 1-mile (1 loop), run 100-yards, one helper allowed.
7 - 8 years old and 9 - 10 years old: swim 100-yards, bike 2-miles (1 loop), run 0.5-miles,
11- 12 years old and 13 - 14 years old: swim 200-yards, bike 4-miles (1 loop), run 1-mile.

Toughteens is a triathlon for ages 15-19 years old. Teens will swim 300-yards, bike 6-miles (closed to traffic), run 2.5-miles. 

On Sunday, September 16, Toughman offers a half-Iron distance triathlon for the grown-ups swim 1.2-miles, bike 56-miles, run-13.1 miles or an aquabike event with distances of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, with a 100-yard dash to finish at Lake Welch, Harriman State Park. Troughman offers a Paratriathlete category for physically challenged athletes. Registration open to USAT classifications Tri 2 -Tri 6. Wheelchairs are not permitted on the run course. 

Zoot Westchester Triathlon Westchester Triathlon Club’s Beginner Tri Program Race, open to members only. Saturday, September 22, Rye, NY.Olympic Triathlon-
Distance: Swim 1500 Meters, Bike 24.9 Miles, Run 6.2 Miles
Super Sprint Triathlon-
Distance: Swim 300 Yards, Bike 6 Miles, Run 1 Miles.
