It's time to renew, or join for this first time.
Members of the Minnewaska Distance Swimmers Association, MDSA, after proving their swimming proficiency, get to swim in the glacial Lake Minnewaska  away from the crowds.  The MDSA beach is about half a mile away from the public beach. There is a quarter mile lap designated with buoys. Members must swim with a partner either in the water or on the beach.

Make sure to do at least part of the swim back stroke to experience the breath-taking view of the sky framed by the cliffs and tree.

The beach opens in June.

In order to join the MDSA you must pass a swim test administered by MDSA, fill out an application, and sign a release of liability for NY State Park and MDSA. You must be at least 18 years old, or 16 if your parent or guardian is an MDSA member and accompanies you to the MDSA beach.

You must adhere to the MDSA rules MDSA Beach and Rules section and pay annual dues of $20.00. The dues pay our insurance policy and other administrative costs — MDSA leaders are all volunteers.

Apply online in advance and BRING A PRINTOUT of your online application to the test.

And, please be patient at the test. Give yourself time to go through the data entry, payment, photo/card, and testing process. For instructions to follow at the actual test site, click here (MDSA Swim Test Instructions).
Remember that MDSA is an all volunteer organization.

Eight Bridges Swim

Starting Sunday June 7 and continuing for seven days swimmers will travel the total of 120 miles connecting the Rip Van Winkle, Kingston-Rhinecliff, Mid-Hudson, Newburgh-Beacon, Bear Mountain, Tappan Zee, George Washington, and Verrazano Narrows Bridges in the Hudson River.

Water temps this time of year range from 68 degrees near Poughkeepsie to 57 at Kings Point, the closer to the ocean the colder the water and these swimmers will not be wearing wet suits.

Legs of the race vary from 13.2 miles to 19.8 and only a handful of swimmers attempt all seven stages. Many swimmer choose to do one leg or participate as a relay team.

The start of the race is timed to coincided with the max flood prior to ebb and tide is at  +2.0 knots downstream.

Quick times from the longest legs are around 4 hours and 4 minutes. For more average swimmers it can take as long as 8.

David Barra is the mastermind of this week of swimming and will be found in the water with the others for the next week.
