Hudson Valley Paddlesports Symposium

Well, I’m heading out onto the water this weekend with the Hudson Valley Paddlesport Symposium.Prime Paddlesports is putting on this three-day event down in Cold Spring.
I’ll be on the Pro Track learning how to sea kayak. Check back on Monday for tales of my adventur
es.

According to Matt Kane, owner of Hudson River Paddlesports, the Pro Track Course is one of Prime Paddlesport's most successful ways of ensuring paddler development.
Paddler are paired up with others of similar skill and experience for the entire weekend. The curriculum is determined by the area’s each paddle wants to work on. Because there is a low student to instructor ratio this it is easy to structure the day to fit everyone’s needs.
“Our aim is to help build better paddlers,” Kane said.
Some of the instructors for the weekend will be John Carmody, Andrea Knepper, Santiago Buretta, Gerry Polinsky, Ron Gautreau, and Carl Ladd.
The multi-day packages include lodging and meals, Morning Yoga access to the Reel Paddling Film Festival, and entry into the drawing for a Dagger Stratos Kayak and more.
The symposium is not just for new paddlers. Over the three days there is also a American Canoe Association L1 / L2 SUP Instructor Certification Workshop going on.
There will also be Sampler Sessions; where new paddlers get to  try out different disciplines of paddlesports.
Prime Paddlesports is also offering Incident Management and Rescue training.
Courses in the newish sport of surfski paddling are available too. A surfski is long, narrow, lightweight kayak with an open (sit-on-top) cockpit, usually with a foot pedal controlled rudder. It’s intended for open ocean conditions and surfing swells.
Kane wants to offer something for everyone this weekend so there are also Intro to Stand Up Paddling courses and a Women's Sea Kayaking Workshop.
On Saturday night there will be a cookout and outdoor screening of the  Reel Paddling Film Festival at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center. This is also when the raffles and a drawing to win a new Dagger Stratos Kayak will take place. The Reel Paddling Film Festival is touring the world with the ten paddling films that won the Reel Paddling Film Festival competition.
