Monochromatic Fall

I'm a bit like that Winnie the Pooh meme. Pooh asks ‘what day is it?’ Piglet says ‘today’. Piglet replies ‘that’s my favorite day’. But I'm like that with the seasons.
My favorite season is the one I’m in. There is such joy to be found in each.  Like the silence of winter when the world is blanketed with snow. Or the warmth and carefreeness of summer, and the sweet freedom of going everywhere barefoot. There are the bursts of autumn color and the gift of every warm day as colder weather nears. And the newness and promise spring wafting on the scent of the awakening earth.
I revel in it all.
Except now- these weeks after the leaves have fallen but before the winter solstice when the days lengthen once again.
This I don’t like. It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s brown and gray.
My motivation for adventure withers. I hunker down on my couch and eat. I’m reluctant to go outside after dark. My body just hasn’t adjusted to the cold and I want to stay in the blanket nest, hat on indoors, shod in oversized wool socks.
Candy bars and coffee become my artificial motivation. A cup of coffee warms me up and gets me out to the door to run or ride and chocolate after is my reward for leaving the house.
When the snows come it’ll shift and I’ll love the outdoors for itself again. But for the next few weeks of monochromatic fall, you’ll find me post-run in the candy aisle, my sweaty clothes quickly cooling, searching for incentive.
