Manitou's Revenge '15
June '15
The third running of the Manitou’s Revenge ultra-trail run takes place Saturday morning starting in Windham, N.Y. on the northern Black Dome Trail.
The 56 mile race pretty much follows the Long Path from Acra Point all the way to downtown Phoenicia, N.Y. It's named after an Algonquin God.
Not much has changed this year from the last two years, Charlie Gadol, race director, explained.
“The course is pretty much the same. We have pretty much the same runners and volunteers,” Gadol said.
Volunteers have their particular aid station they like to go to.
"The level of enthusiasm at the aid stations is incredible. The Mink Hollow aid station has a cafe and serves up pirogi. Some of the volunteers camp out overnight at the stations in the later stages of the race," Gadol said.
Registration for the race is closed out at a little over 100 people. There are 6 relay teams of 2 or 3 people. The teams decided where to break it up the stages. .
Last year’s race was a record pace and was decided in the last 15 miles of the race.
“The footing is rocky and technical,” Dick Vincent, Race Director of the Escarpment Trail Run, said. “Especially in the first and last thirds”. Vincent estimates there will be 35,000 feet of elevation change throughout the race; that’s the equivalent of running up and down the Empire State Building 17 times.
The last 15 miles of the race from Mink Hollow to Phoenicia runners will climb 1300 feet, similar to Black Head Mountain on the Escarpment Trail. Then follow the Warner Brook Trail, to Silver Hollow up a mountain no one has ever heard of, and wade through a stream. Runners will gain 1,500 feet and lose 2000 in about 2.5 miles and finish by running down Mount Tremper.
There is a hard cut-off for the checkpoint at Platt Clove at 8pm and a 24 hour time limit for runners.
“It’s shaping up to be pretty good weather this year,” Galod said. The forecast is calling for a high in the mid-70s and only a 40 percent chance of rain in the late afternoon.
Gadol finished up by saying:“People seem to like the race, they keep coming back."
Congratulations to all who participated in Manitou 2015, and to the winners, Brian Rusiecki and Sheryl Wheeler
