Manitou's Revenge Ultra-marathon
and Relay '13
June'13
The start gun will sound for the first annual Manitou’s Revenge Ultramarathon and Relay at 5am Saturday, June 22.
It is a 56 mile, grueling, run through the Catskills beginning in Windham, N.Y. on the northern Black Dome Trail, and then following the Long Path from Acra Point all the way to downtown Phoenicia, N.Y.
Some of the best trail runners in the country will be participating according to Dick Vincent, founder/director Escarpment Trail Run, and co- organizer of Manitou’s Revenge
“The footing is rocky and technical,” Vincent said. “Especially in the first and last thirds”. Vincent estimates there will be 35,000 feet of elevation change throughout the race; that’s the equivalent of running up and down the Empire State Building 17 times.
The quick time for this race is estimated to be 11 hours but the organizers say that runners should expect this race to take longer than the average 50 miler. That’s why 24 hours is the max time for the race.
Check back on Saturday for pics, results, and interviews with runners.

Manitou's Revenge Ultra Marathon
Manitou, Algonquin God, had his revenge today on the runners of the first annual Manitou’s Revenge Ultra-Marathon. The 56-mile trail run started at 5am Saturday morning. The first runner across the finish like came in 11 hours, 51 minutes and 35 seconds later.
Dennis Mikhalor, of NYC, Passed the fire tower atop Mount Tremper at 4:30-exactly, looking as if her were on mile 5, not mile 50.
Near Sliver Hallow a foot race broke out between Mikhaylor and Ryan Wells, second finisher at 12:11:45. According to Wells, that’s something that rarely happens in ultras.
“The Devil’s Path blew my mind,” Wels said. “It was demoralizing.” But in the end he was happt in the end he was happy with his performance.
Third finisher of the day was Ashley Moyer, of Lockhaven Pa, with a time of 13:32:08. Moyer has been running ultra-distances for three years and considers herself an ultra-runner. She recently ran the Bear Mountain 50K. In comparison it was “maybe not this hard,” Moyer said. “Manitous has more ups and downs than any race on the east coast.”
Moyer said she knew she was in third place around the 30 mile point and she kept her place for the next 24 miles.
As of 7pm only three of the 60 runners, haling from 10 states, and 2 provinces, had finished the race. At that point two people had dropped out.
FROM EARLY 20S TO MID-60S HAD FINISHED. AS OF 7:00 ONLY TWO RUNNERS HAD DROPPED OUT.
Race Director Charlie Gadol Set clear guidelines for the cutoff points.
“There is a hard cutoff at Platte Clove. You must reach Platte Clove by 8pm. If you proceed beyond Platte Clove after 8pm you will be officially out of the race. We will not support you and you will be banned from any other events I organize,” Gadol said.
Event organizers expect to be at the end in Phoenicia until 7 or 8 am when the last runners slog over the finish line.
