Lime Kiln Races '16 at Williams Lake

The Peak territory of the mid-Hudson Valley is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to trail running events and new offerings are added every year.
The Lime Kiln Races at Williams Lake are one such. The weekend long event, put on by Finger Lakes based Red Newt Racing(RNR), offers three different distance races – a 5K, a 10K, and a half-marathon; and the opportunity to run all three.
Race directors Jason Friedman and Ian Ridgeway, conceived of the event to be more than three discrete races, but rather a camping, swimming, BBQing, live music, family-friendly, trail-running extravaganza.
The half-marathon course follows single track, double track, old logging roads, some rail trail, and navigates through the Village of Rosendale and then up Joppenbergh Mountain. The greatest elevation gain is from the village to the top of Joppenbergh, about 400 feet in around half a mile.
"About 3-4 miles of the half will be rail trail the rest a 50/50 mix of technical singletrack and doubletrack/ATV trails," Friedman said.
Each distance has a slightly different course over the trails around the lakes and through the cave at Williams Lake. The 10K and 5K are a 50/50 split of single and double track with less than half a mile on the rail trail.
RNR used existing trails on the Williams Lake property, with cooperation from the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and some local landowners, according to Friedman.
The half starts at 8am, the 10K at 11. This gives runners plenty of time to finish 13.1 miles of trails and toe the line for another 6.2 miles. At 12:30 the gun goes off for an additional 3.1 miles of trail running.
There have been running races, mountain bike races, and a triathlon on the Williams Lake property but the Lime Kiln Races will go a bit deeper into the property and incorporate the lime kiln after which the race is named.
Rosendale was extremely prolific in the production of cement in the late 1800s. The Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty were built with Rosendale Cement.
The extravaganza includes two nights of minimalist camping at Williams Lake. Munchies for Friday night and Saturday morning. There will also be post-race food Saturday afternoon.
Dinner Saturday night is BBQ from Arkansas Tom in Tillson. After that head out the the cave for music with bluegrass musician Brian Hollander.
More munchies Sunday morning to fuel the packing up.
The weather is looking pretty perfect for this coming weekend's running extravaganza. Pack up the whole family and get out; younger runners, especially, are encouraged to participate.
Online registration closes tonight(Thursday 8.4) at midnight. https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=38002
