Hudson River Valley Greenway

The 256 mile Hudson River is the main artery of the Catskills, the Shawangunks and the Hudson Highlands. Native Americans recognized the tidal nature of the river, calling it Mahicantuck, which loosely translated means "river that flows both ways." It's part of a tributary system 70 direct and indirect feed creeks.
While the Hudson gathers its water from the entire watershed, its recognized source is Lake Tear of the Clouds on the southwest side of New York's highest peak, Mount Marcy. From Lake Tear, the Hudson journeys 315 miles and drops 4,322 feet in elevation on its way to New York Harbor.
For kayaker, canoers, and SUPs access to the river and her tributaries is a concern. Since 2005 the NYSDEC Estuary Program has funded 23 new car top or hand launches for canoes and kayaks (14 in NYC including Inwood Park and Governor's Island, Newburgh, Cold Spring, Cortlandt, Glasco, Piermont, Yonkers, Irvington, Esopus Meadows), 3 new trailered launches (Bethlehem, Schodack State Park, Haverstraw), and 6 upgrades to existing trailered launches (Newburgh, Peekskill, Mills-Norrie State Park, Athens, Rhinebeck and Coxsackie).
In early June 2016 the Hudson River Valley Greenway announced a suite of tools geared toward making finding ways t access the Hudson easier.
